In this test, the examiner places the knee in full extension and applies a medial translation force. Medial subluxation, which most often occurs in a patient after a lateral release, occurs in the ititial flexion arc of 0 - 30°. After this point, the patella reduces into the bony confines of the trochlear groove when the knee is flexed.

Initial starting point for assessment of medial patellar subluxation. A medial directed force subluxes the patella medially.

Once medial subluxation is demontrated, the knee is flexed and the patella will reduce into the bony confines of the trochlear groove at about 30° - 35°.
