It is important to asses a patient's knee motion as one of the first portions of the physical exam. The symptomatic knee's range of motion must be compared to the normal contralateral knee. Limitations in motion may be due to an acute injury, a mechanical block, arthritis, residual stiffness from an injury or surgery, or other pathology. Increases in motion are almost always due to injury.
